Monday, August 24, 2009 I love my dog. I do. She speaks english, loves bananas, and at 9 years old still chases her tail. I don't believe my dog is human, but I do believe she understands.
What is the problem then?
There is a restaurant here in Sandpoint, that has decided to refuse to play Philadelphia Eagles games, and refuses to serve Coors Light (and some other beer) because of Michael Vick. Ok. Michael Vick committed a crime. He was convicted, tried, and served his time. I believe dog fighting is wrong, I do. But this is AMERICA, we have a judicial system, convicted felons serve their time, get out of jail and re-enter the work force. Felons that molest children, drink and drive, sell drugs, rob, batter, and stalk other HUMANS are allowed to walk as free citizens again.
This business serves the flesh of animals; animals that spend their entire lives in captivity, born bread and slain for human consumption. While you sit in this restaurant, you can look around the decor is the heads of several different species mounted, there are moose, deer, bear, turkey, etc... When did the concern for animals welfare occur? Before or after the time it was perfectly fine to track a cougar down shoot it with a rifle, gut it, throw the meat away and then have the remaining parts of the corpse stuffed, so that you could have a trophy? Fuck that.
I'm sorry but fuck that.
Some people might think that hunting is barbaric. Bullfighting is disgusting. Cock fights are horrifying. The raising of VEAL is the worse torture I could fathom. But in some cultures, its perfectly fine to do these things. Some people would argue that breeding a dog to fight, is just as normal as rolling around in elk piss, wearing camo, and then opening fire on the unsuspecting animal.
Do you hate Michael Vick because you hate that part of yourself that exploits animals? Or is the problem more rooted in jealousy? Michael Vick gets to go back to being famous and playing football, thats his job. Would it be better if he went back to being a mechanic or welfare recipient, would that be more acceptable? Do you expect that all the animal lovers will applaud your concern for dogs but overlook your meat laden menu and corpse decor?
Football players are paid to play football. Its their job. When a hair dresser goes to jail and is released he goes back to cutting hair.
